Samuel Moniz is a Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, where he has taught since 2018, and a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 2025. His research lies at the intersection of operations research, machine learning, and operations management, with a focus on advanced optimization methods for supply chains and manufacturing systems. His work centers on mathematical programming models, decomposition techniques, and non-exact approaches for solving large-scale optimization problems under both deterministic and stochastic conditions.
He earned his PhD through the MIT Portugal Program in Leaders for Technological Industries, jointly developed by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, and holds a Master’s in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Porto. His professional trajectory includes a research fellowship at Hovione, a research position at INESC TEC, and a visiting scholar appointment at MIT’s Engineering Systems Division.
Samuel has led several high-impact research projects on digital and autonomous factories, pharmaceutical supply chains, and additive manufacturing. From 2020 to 2024, he served as Vice President of APDIO, the Portuguese Operational Research Society.
