Paulo Nascimento

Researcher

Paulo Nascimento completed his PhD at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra as an MPP2030–FCT fellow. His doctoral research focused on the development of optimization methods for integrated scheduling and nesting problems in Additive Manufacturing–based production systems, bridging modeling, algorithmic design, and scalable solution approaches.

He holds both a BSc and an MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management from the University of Coimbra and has been a Visiting Researcher at other international institutions, including MIT and Princeton University. His research interests lie at the intersection of Operations Research and advanced analytics, with a particular emphasis on mathematical optimization, simulation, and machine learning applied to real-world decision-making problems in production and manufacturing systems.

Paulo has teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with courses covering topics such as Operations Research, Flexible Production Systems, Continuous Improvement, and Quality Management. He is also actively involved in academic mentoring, currently co-advising three PhD students, and has co-advised multiple master’s dissertations, as well as contributing to academic initiatives that engage bachelor’s and master’s students in skills development and interaction with real-world decision-making and industrial problems.
